"A STYLE OF ONE'S OWN--ANTIQUES FOR GIRLS"
FREE WORKSHOP AND EXHIBIT IN ALEDO
Hot Tamale Antiques-Aledo announces a new summer exhibit and free workshop for area residents. The exhibit,"A Style of One's Own--Antiques for Girls," will run through August 7 and features two imaginary sisters' rooms. "Lisa's Room" blooms with vintage floral pillows, white wicker, lace and quilts on antique brass bed. "Laura's Room" shelters a tomboy who loves the outdoors, horses, dogs, rustic furniture and anything cowgirl. Both rooms will be displayed in the A.J. Hood pioneer homestead on Jenkins Road, the home of Hot Tamale Antiques. The store is located near I-20 at exit 418, just 15 minutes West of Ft. Worth.
"Summer is a great time for children and young people to re-create their space," says Hot Tamale Antiques owner Jan Orr-Harter. "Whether it's a room or a part of a room, this space is their haven. It's their first nest and a positive place to experiment with their sense of creativity, identity and the person that they are becoming." The exhibit offers antiques in a variety of styles and price ranges with an emphasis on quality furniture and accessories that can grow up with a girl and be treasured and useful into adulthood, perhaps even passed on to another little girl. "Often we decorate for children with things that will soon be discarded," continues Orr-Harter. "Antiques teach us that we can care for belongings and treasure them from generation to generation."
To help girls and families who want to create unique rooms, Hot Tamale Antiques will host 2 free workshops on "Antiques for Girls" on Sat. July 10 and again on Sat. July 17 from 10-30-11:45 am. It's open to girls of all ages and their family and friends. Girls will be invited to consider what they want their space to be like and adults will reflect on the role a room may have played in their own growing up. There will be refreshments, a tour of 3 sample girl's rooms and a demonstration of ideas for using vintage items and family collectibles in a girl's space.
Accordingly, Lisa and Laura's fantasy rooms incorporate the use of old items for a new purpose. For instance, Lisa loves her lampshades covered in vintage tablecloth fabric, while Laura uses a newly painted hen roost from a barn to store all those things that girls need a place to store. Hopefully, families will be encouraged by the show to go home and try new ways of using things they already have to enliven their children's rooms.
The third girl's room on the tour July 10 and July 17 is the real-life room of Della Orr-Harter, 4 year-old daughter of the shop's owner and star of the "Antiquing With Della" series in Antique Prime magazine. Della's room features a wall of vintage flower paintings and an antique pie safe used as a home for---you guessed it---Barbie dolls.
The exhibit is open on Thursdays and Fridays from 12-5 and Saturdays from 10-5 or by appointment. New items will be added weekly through August 7. Credit cards accepted. For information and directions, call (817) 291-3952 or HotTamaleAntiques.com
